One of the most common questions that screen printing businesses have early on is “How do I get a resale certificate so I can buy wholesale t-shirts and blanks?”
Thankfully, this isn’t a very complicated process! Each wholesaler has easy-to-follow instructions to help you.
Why you want a resale certificate
Resale certificates are fundamentally about taxes. Each state collects sales taxes differently, so you’ll have to understand your state’s laws.
When you buy wholesale garments, you may be exempt from paying the sales tax on your wholesale purchases. You’re still typically responsible for collecting sales taxes on your sales, however.
How to get a resale certificate
Search for your state’s specific requirements for resale certificates before you begin. Your state’s revenue department will typically have the most relevant information for getting a resale certificate.
You may need a business license, or to understand any variety of requirements for getting your certificate.
Thankfully, several states have banded together to create the multi-state resale certificate.
These states include:
- Alabama
- Alaska
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- District of Columbia
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Kansas
- Missouri
- Montana
- New Mexico
- North Dakota
- Oregon
- Texas
- Utah
- Washington
If you live in one of those states, the multi-state resale certificate (pictured and linked below) will suffice. Several other states also accept the same certificate.
If you live outside of those states, check with your local revenue office for more details.
